Brussels deploys intelligent streetlighting solution
Itron is working with Equans and Sibelga on the network-as-a-service solution, which as well as reduce electricity consumption will lay the foundation for future smart city capabilities.
Brussels is deploying an intelligent LED streetlighting solution through Itron’s network-as-a-service model to meet the Belgian capital’s energy-saving goals and improve citizen safety.
The company is collaborating with multi-technical services company Equans and network operator Sibelga. Installation is expected to be complete by the end of 2021.
Cutting electricity consumption
The solution includes the supply of luminaire controllers, design of the radio frequency (RF) mesh network and 10 years of communication management for each controller, provided by Itron.
With Sibelga the only distribution network operator for electricity in the 19 municipalities of the Brussels Capital Region, Itron claims its solution will help make it possible to cut electricity consumption in Brussels by 20 per cent by 2035.
Beyond the energy-savings of the LED streetlight, smart street lighting offers a wide range of benefits, including improved network resiliency, enhanced safety and increased customer satisfaction.

Created in July 2021, Equans operates as a new separate entity within low carbon and energy serivces company Engie. It designs and provides customised solutions to improve clients’ technical equipment and processes and to optimise their uses and focuses on the areas of electrical, HVAC, cooling, mechanical and robotics, digital and IT and facility management.
