France Through Eliminating Peru
As it did in the previous game with Denmark last Sunday, Peru attacked with flair. However, after 90 minutes and 6 minutes additional time of football they still unable to score a goal against France. Several incredible attempts were made by the Peruvian defenders especially by Aquino who unfortunately only rattled the post but 19-year-old French forward’s tap at minute 34 sealed Les Bleus spot in the knockout stage, sending Peru out. The whole play was entertaining as the spirited Peruvians, with brilliant attacks, managed to earn several corners and dangerous free kicks. But the finishing still shows 0 points and 0 goals in their ledger.
Meanwhile, France did not exactly march on. Their performance might be a bit different, slightly better, compared to their last match with Australia and that only because of constant pressure coming from the South American. Still, France’s play yesterday was pretty much a combination of fast running and slower running, “spells of intense brilliance blended with slow meandering” (The Guardian, 2018). It was definitely not at par with the match they had in Euro 2016. Moreover, there was not much coming from the star-studded player, Griezmann, who earned the highest number of goals for France and brought them head to head with Portugal in the final two years ago. If it was not for Giroud’s poke and Mbappe’s tap securing France with a goal, France might end with a tie. At this point, it is still hard to know how far they will go.
