Hoo-Cheng keep flag flying as Malaysians fall at Petronas international
They took the mixed-doubles title with a 21-17, 21-19 victory over a Taiwanese pair, Japanese players dominated in the other events.
IPOH: Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair of Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin kept the national flag flying at the 2023 Petronas Malaysia international badminton championships with a 21-17, 21-19 victory over Taiwan’s Lin Yu Chieh-Hsu Yin Hui.
Japanese and Taiwanese players dominated most of the events as Malaysia’s other hopefuls failed in the men’s doubles, men’s singles, and women’s doubles finals.
The men’s doubles pair of Fazriq Razif-Wong Vin Sean put up a strong fight in a 21-16, 18-21, 21-14 thriller that lasted more than an hour, finally succumbing to the Japanese pair of Takuto Inoue-Masayuki Onodera.
Malaysia’s women’s doubles pair Ng Qi Xuan-Yap Yee were defeated by Lin Chih Chun-Sung Yu Hsuan of Taiwan 21-11, 21-18 in the final.
Wong Ling Ching’s hopes for the women’s singles title were dashed by Miho Kayama of Japan, who won 23-21, 21-16.
Minoru Koga clinched the men’s singles title after beating fellow countryman Takuma Kawamoto 21-17, 10-21, 21-11 in the final at the Perak badminton arena. Minoru who took the first game 21-17, lost the second 10-21 before winning the third game 21-11 after a 60-minute duel in the all-Japanese final.
