SEOUL: Netflix has reportedly paid a bonus of US$15 million (approximately RM62.23 million) to Sony Pictures, the studio behind the hit animated feature 'K-Pop: Demon Hunters'.

The Hollywood Reporter said on Nov 6 that the bonus was awarded in recognition of the film's strong global performance on the streaming platform.

With this latest payment, Sony Pictures' total profit from the film has reached US$40 million (RM165.96 million).

The company had previously received around US$25 million (RM103.72 million) from Netflix, separate from the animation's production cost of US$100 million (RM414.90 million).

Industry reports also confirmed that Netflix and Sony Pictures have signed an agreement to produce a sequel to 'K-Pop: Demon Hunters', which is scheduled for release in 2029.

Variety reported that the deal was finalised with consideration of the long production timeline typically required for animated projects.

Originally planned for a theatrical release, the film's distribution rights were sold to Netflix in 2021 due to box office uncertainties during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The film premiered worldwide on Netflix in June 2024 and quickly became a global sensation, surpassing 300 million views and becoming the most-watched Netflix film to date.

Its soundtrack also drew significant international attention.

The song Golden topped both the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Official Singles Chart, solidifying its position as a global hit.

The track has been nominated for five Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year, and is regarded as a strong contender for Best Original Song at the 2026 Academy Awards.
