Proton e.MAS 7 keeps crown as Malaysia’s top EV for eighth straight month, 5,811 units sold up to August

By Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 — Proton New Energy Technology Sdn Bhd (PRO-NET), a subsidiary of Proton, announced today that the Proton e.MAS 7 retained its position as Malaysia’s No. 1 electric vehicle in August 2025.

Deliveries from January to August reached 5,811 units, including 5,455 local sales and 356 exports to four international markets.

“We are sincerely grateful to all Proton e.MAS 7 owners for their trust and support,” PRO-NET chief executive officer Zhang Qiang said in a statement today.

“Every milestone we achieve is because of your belief in us, and we remain committed to delivering lasting value and continuously improving the ownership experience for all Malaysians,” he added.

The Proton e.MAS 7 has been the nation’s best-selling EV for eight consecutive months, holding a 24 per cent market share.

According to JPJ registration data, nearly one in every four EVs sold in Malaysia is a Proton e.MAS 7.

The company recently introduced new variants with over-the-air updates, fresh exterior colours and interior choices.

August also marked the official opening of Proton’s first dedicated EV plant in Tanjung Malim, Perak.

The facility, located in the Automotive High Technology Valley, has an initial annual capacity of 20,000 vehicles, scalable to 45,000 units.

The e.MAS 7, previously imported as a completely built-up unit from China, will soon be locally assembled at the new plant.

The local assembly aims to improve accessibility, create skilled jobs and involve local vendors in the EV supply chain.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for the rollout of a competitively priced Proton EV ahead of the Asean Summit in October.
