Speed up installation of speed limiter devices

By NewStraitsTime
IT is deeply worrying to learn that 92 per cent of commercial vehicles have yet to install speed limiter devices, despite the fact that speeding remains one of the leading causes of fatal road accidents in our country.
This situation is not only unacceptable but also poses a grave risk to the lives of road users daily.
Commercial vehicles such as buses, lorries, and trailers carry great responsibility as they share the roads with millions of motorists and pedestrians.

Without proper safety controls, speeding by heavy vehicles can result in catastrophic accidents with devastating consequences.
To address this urgent issue, several measures must be considered:
1. Strict enforcement and clear deadlines – Authorities must set a firm and non-negotiable timeline for all commercial vehicles to install speed limiter devices. Failure to comply should result in heavy fines, suspension of permits, or even vehicle impoundment.
2. Subsidies and incentives – The government should consider providing financial assistance or tax incentives to ease the burden on small operators, ensuring that cost is not used as an excuse for non-compliance.
3. Periodic inspections and monitoring – The Road Transport Department (JPJ) and Puspakom should make speed limiter functionality part of mandatory vehicle inspections, with surprise enforcement operations to catch errant operators.
4. Awareness and training – Transport companies and drivers must be educated about the importance of speed limiters, not as a burden, but as a life-saving measure to protect both drivers and the public.
It must be emphasised that road safety cannot be compromised in the name of cost or convenience.
The installation of speed limiter devices is a critical step to reduce accidents, save lives, and build a culture of responsibility on our roads.
The time for excuses is over — it is time for immediate action.
