TENAGA Nasional Bhd (TNB) is expecting two renewable energy (RE) projects to reach their commercial operation date (COD) by 2027.
According to Strategy and Ventures Division (Corporate Ventures) head Nor Ziha Zainol Abidin, TNB’s RE portfolio is mainly focused on hydro energy and solar energy.
She noted that the latest RE project, the Nenggiri Hydroelectric Power Plant, Kelantan, is currently under construction and is expected to achieve commercial operation by 2027.
“There’s a special feature for the Nenggiri Hydroelectric Power Plant which will also come with one gigawatt (GW) of hybrid hydro floating solar.
“We were also awarded by the government through the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) with two RE projects totalling to 3GW — the ground-mounted Solar Park and the other is the hybrid hydro floating solar (which) will be installed at our hydro dams throughout Peninsular Malaysia.
“We will see the first COD of the hybrid hydro floating solar in Kenyir, Terengganu, around the end of 2026,” she said at the Fifth German-Malaysian Business Forum on April 15.
On another note, Nor Ziha said the four major challenges towards accelerating decarbonisation which entails phasing out fossil fuels include energy security and reliability; investment and financing; cost and affordability; and technology readiness and scalability.
Despite these, she reiterated that TNB is very supportive of the energy transition and is committed to drive energy transition as “energy is always at the heart of every industrialisation”.
“We are here with the government to accelerate clean technology adoption through various means. We welcome industry and government collaboration,” she added.
