KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 β Traffic congestion is steadily intensifying across major highways nationwide as Malaysians begin their annual balik kampung journeys ahead of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
Key routes such as the North-South Expressway (PLUS), East Coast Expressway (LPT), and Kuala LumpurβKarak Expressway are already experiencing a significant surge in traffic volume, particularly during early morning and late evening hours. Several stretches have reported slow-moving vehicles, with travel times increasing by up to several hours compared to normal conditions.
Highway authorities have indicated that the rise in congestion is expected to continue over the next few days, as more people leave urban centres to return to their hometowns. Popular routes heading north towards Perlis and Kedah, as well as eastbound routes towards Pahang, Terengganu, and Kelantan, are among the most affected.
In addition to high vehicle volume, congestion has also been worsened by minor accidents, roadworks, and bottlenecks near toll plazas and rest and service areas (R&R). Many R&R locations have reported overcrowding, with limited parking space contributing to slower traffic flow as vehicles queue to enter facilities.
Meanwhile, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has implemented traffic control measures and deployed additional officers along major highways to manage the situation and assist motorists. Patrol units have also been increased to respond quickly to emergencies and ensure smooth traffic movement.
Authorities are urging motorists to plan their journeys in advance, check real-time traffic updates, and consider travelling during off-peak hours to avoid severe congestion. Drivers are also advised to ensure their vehicles are in good condition, maintain a safe following distance, and avoid using mobile phones while driving.
Public transport services, including buses and trains, have also seen a spike in demand as an alternative to driving. However, many services are already fully booked, reflecting the scale of travel during the festive season.
As the celebration draws nearer, traffic volume is expected to peak within the final days before Hari Raya, with millions of vehicles anticipated on the road simultaneously. Motorists are reminded to remain patient and prioritize safety, as the festive journey is not just about reaching the destination, but ensuring everyone arrives safely to celebrate with loved ones.
