RM2,000 profit from tents? Landlord rents out tents for RM400 a month in residential hall

Viral post exposes tents rented as rooms, raising concerns over safety, exploitation and lack of housing regulation in Malaysia

housing shortage is one matter, but converting living rooms into makeshift campsites is quite another.

A viral social media post has cast a harsh spotlight on the extreme measures some landlords take to maximise profits, triggering a heated debate over safety, regulation and the erosion of basic human dignity.

The controversy erupted after a post on X by user @pojiepooh shared a first-hand account of a rental viewing, accompanied by a photograph of several tents pitched inside a residential hall.

According to the post, a fresh graduate seeking affordable accommodation was offered what they initially believed was a standard room.

Upon arrival, however, the applicant discovered that the β€œroom” was actually a tent, similar to those used in disaster relief centres, set up in the common area of the property.

β€œI honestly cannot process this. How could they do this? It is like living as a flood victim,” the message read.

The landlord reportedly charges RM400 per tent, with four to five tents squeezed into a single hall.

This arrangement alone generates up to RM2,000 a month, with all tenants expected to share a single toilet. The accompanying image depicts multiple tents lined up indoors, confirming the unconventional setup.

Public backlash was immediate, with many netizens condemning the practice as predatory.

User @Fatihah_KA described the situation as β€œoutright exploitation,” arguing that even in a tight market, people should be allowed to live with a modicum of dignity.

Other commenters, such as @HilmiAdi, pointed to a lack of oversight, suggesting that Malaysia needs mandatory regulations for Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) to ensure properties meet safety standards and have local management approval.

Some, like @Malacire and @sparky1817906, argued that tenants must take a stand by reporting and boycotting such rentals. They suggested that if demand for these β€œtent rooms” disappears, landlords would be forced to offer better conditions.

The incident has also raised broader questions about the housing market and the vulnerability of students.

User @littleNurina claimed that exploitative practices are becoming common, alleging that even some figures in authority may profit from referring students to subpar housing, leaving young renters with few alternatives.

Meanwhile, user @harithses suggested that the root of the problem lies in housing price manipulation.

They called for stronger government intervention through agencies such as PR1MA and SPNB to provide viable, affordable alternatives.
