P-hailing rider fined for false report to dodge MyKad loss fine

PETALING JAYA: A p-hailing rider was fined RM1,000 by the magistrate's court today after he admitted to lodging a false police report claiming he was robbed to dodge a penalty for losing his MyKad.

Magistrate Farah Azura Mohd Saad ordered Akhmal Izzuddin Jamsuri, 22, to serve a month in jail if he failed to pay the fine after pleading guilty to the charge.

The magistrate reprimanded Akhmal, who stood in the dock, over his actions to avoid the RM1,000 fine.

"Why did you file the false police report? Who taught you?

"There was so much exaggeration in the report claiming you were scratched and you even screamed for help.

"You have wasted the police's time," she said.

Akhmal replied he acted on his own and resorted to making the false report to evade being fined by the National Registration Department.

The court heard that he had made a police report at the Sungai Way police station alleging two men on a motorcycle had robbed him of his wallet while he was walking along Jalan PJS 10/24.

He claimed one of the men restrained him and took his wallet which contained important documents.

A probe revealed that the robbery never occurred and the investigating officer found Akhmal had fabricated the report to avoid the penalty.

He was charged with knowingly making a false police report which misled investigators who launched a probe.

He committed the offence at 4.18pm on April 18 at the police station.

The offence under Section 182 of the Penal Code carries a maximum six month jail term or with a fine up to RM2,000 or both upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Ainul Athirah Jamalullail asked the court to mete out a deterrent sentence as the accused had wasted the resources of many parties.

In mitigation, National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Wan Nor Nazra Wan Nazoha asked for a lenient sentence for Akhmal, a bachelor earning unstable income and supporting his parents.

"He is a first offender. He is repentant and vows not to repeat it," she said.
