US Tightens Defence Supply Chain Rules Over China-Linked Critical Minerals Concerns

WASHINGTON, July 21 — The United States has introduced stricter rules aimed at reducing reliance on China and other foreign suppliers for critical materials used in defence production, as Washington continues efforts to strengthen national security and domestic manufacturing capacity.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order requiring defence contractors to provide greater transparency on their supply chains, including the sources of minerals and materials used in military equipment.

The new measures focus on critical minerals such as rare earth elements, which are essential for advanced defence technologies, including aircraft, electronics, and weapons systems. Officials said the move is intended to identify potential vulnerabilities and encourage companies to develop alternative supply sources.

The Pentagon has been directed to review lower-tier suppliers and assess risks involving foreign ownership or control of key materials. Defence contractors may also be required to submit plans showing how they will reduce dependence on restricted suppliers.

The decision highlights ongoing strategic competition between the United States and China, particularly over technology, manufacturing, and access to critical resources.

China remains one of the world's largest processors of rare earth minerals, giving Beijing significant influence over global supply chains. The latest US action reflects Washington's broader push to strengthen domestic production and reduce exposure to geopolitical disruptions.

Industry analysts said the policy could benefit American mining and processing companies but may also increase costs for defence manufacturers in the short term.
