KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 — Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) said any decision regarding Malaysia’s potential return as a Formula One (F1) host will be determined by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and relevant authorities.
In a statement, the national oil company said it was aware of discussions surrounding the possibility of Malaysia hosting an F1 race again, following reports that the country could be considered as a replacement venue if the Bahrain Grand Prix cannot proceed.
Petronas said the company will continue to explore opportunities that support its strategic and commercial goals while contributing long-term value to the nation.
Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari previously said the ministry was reviewing the possibility of bringing F1 back to the Sepang International Circuit (SIC), with further announcements expected once discussions are completed.
Malaysia last hosted an F1 Grand Prix in 2017, although SIC has continued to host international motorsport events, including MotoGP, and still holds the FIA Grade 1 licence required for Formula One races.
Petronas, which has sponsored the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team since 2010, has previously been linked with efforts to bring the championship back to Malaysia.
The Sepang International Circuit remains active in motorsports and secured Petronas naming rights for a three-year period in 2023.
