NEW YORK, July 29 — The United States has added advanced humanoid and four-legged robots to its national security import restriction list, citing concerns over potential cybersecurity risks linked to foreign-made robotic technology.
The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced that “advanced robotic devices”, including mobile robots that imitate human or animal movement, are now included among products restricted from import.
The decision follows findings by a White House task force, which warned that foreign-built robots could pose risks to critical infrastructure and the safety of US residents.
Most humanoid robots currently sold in the United States are manufactured overseas, particularly in China. The new restrictions also cover certain foreign-made inverters used in energy systems.
The ban applies only to new robot models and does not affect products that have already been approved or sold in the US. However, exemptions may be granted by the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security.
Several companies already developing or manufacturing humanoid robots in the United States include Boston Dynamics, Tesla, Figure AI and Agility Robotics. Hyundai-owned Boston Dynamics is also planning a US robotics factory capable of producing up to 30,000 units annually.
Tesla has announced plans to expand production of its Optimus humanoid robots, while other robotics firms are also increasing domestic manufacturing capacity.
A Trump administration official said the restriction applies to fully assembled foreign robots, as well as robots assembled in the US if more than 35 per cent of their components are manufactured overseas.
