SEOUL, July 30 — Samsung Electronics reported a sharp increase in second-quarter earnings, driven by strong global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) memory chips.
The South Korean technology giant recorded an operating profit of 89.49 trillion won for the April to June period, marking a nearly 19-fold increase compared with the same quarter last year.
Revenue also climbed significantly to 171.49 trillion won, while net profit rose to 71.62 trillion won, reflecting continued growth in the AI semiconductor market.
The strong financial performance met market expectations despite recent volatility in South Korea's technology sector, where AI-related stocks experienced heavy selling amid concerns over future earnings growth.
Samsung remains one of the world's leading producers of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, alongside SK hynix and Micron. These chips play a crucial role in powering AI applications, including chatbots, data centres and advanced computing systems.
Industry analysts expect demand for AI memory chips to remain strong as major technology companies continue expanding investments in AI infrastructure worldwide.
Samsung is also benefiting from higher demand for conventional NAND and DRAM memory chips, while its growing HBM business is strengthening other parts of its semiconductor operations.
