Discrimination offences now carry minimum 10-match suspension in English football

LONDON, July 31 — Football players, managers and officials found guilty of discriminatory behaviour will face a minimum 10-match suspension under new regulations introduced by the English Football Association (FA).

The FA has increased the minimum punishment after previous bans for discrimination offences ranged between six and 12 matches.

Under the updated guidelines, discrimination includes any direct or indirect reference related to ethnic origin, race, colour, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, or disability.

The new rules apply not only to players but also managers, coaching staff and other football officials.

“The FA is committed to delivering a game free from discrimination. While significant progress has been made in recent years, discriminatory conduct continues to be a challenge across the game,” the governing body said in a statement.

The FA said stronger measures were required to address discriminatory incidents, with regulatory commissions now required to impose a standard suspension of at least 10 matches for such offences.

Longer suspensions can also be issued if serious aggravating factors are present, while individuals committing a second aggravated offence will face harsher penalties compared with their first violation.

However, the FA said shorter bans of at least six matches may still be considered in cases involving mitigating circumstances or when an individual admits the offence at the earliest opportunity.

The move forms part of the FA’s continued efforts to combat discrimination and promote a more inclusive environment across English football.
