LOS ANGELES, Aug 3 — Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the latest instalment in Sony and Marvel’s superhero franchise starring Tom Holland as the iconic web-slinger, has delivered a record-breaking performance at the box office, earning an estimated US$355 million (RM1.49 billion) during its North American opening weekend.
The film recorded the second-highest domestic debut in box office history, trailing only Avengers: Endgame (2019), which earned US$357 million (RM1.50 billion) in its opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo.
Directed as the latest chapter in the Spider-Man saga, the film follows Peter Parker as he struggles with life after erasing his identity from the world, while facing new personal challenges and powerful enemies.
The movie features a star-studded cast including Tom Holland, Zendaya, Mark Ruffalo, Florence Pugh and Sadie Sink.
“This is a colossal opening,” said industry analyst David A. Gross from Franchise Entertainment Research, describing the film’s strong performance as a result of high audience demand following a quiet period for major action releases.
The latest Spider-Man film also performed strongly internationally, collecting an additional US$573 million (RM2.41 billion) from overseas markets, bringing its global box office earnings to approximately US$928 million (RM3.90 billion).
Analysts said international markets are expected to contribute a significant portion of the film’s total earnings, with strong results reported from China, where Hollywood blockbusters have faced challenges in recent years.
Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey maintained its position in second place, earning US$51 million (RM214 million) in North America. The film has now collected nearly US$400 million (RM1.68 billion) domestically.
Based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic, The Odyssey stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland in supporting roles.
Other films in the top five included Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 5, which earned US$6.3 million (RM26.5 million), followed by Universal’s Minions & Monsters with US$5.8 million (RM24.4 million), and Disney’s live-action remake of Moana with US$5.3 million (RM22.3 million).
