Former Tabung Haji chairman Abdul Azeez brought to court for remand

By TheSun

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Tabung Haji chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim was brought before the Magistrate’s Court here today for a remand application in connection with a police investigation into matters highlighted in the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on the pilgrim fund.

His lawyer, Datuk Abu Bakar Isa Ramat said Abdul Azeez, 60, was arrested by the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) at Bukit Aman yesterday afternoon before being taken to the Dang Wangi police station.

“The police will apply for a remand order under Section 420 of the Penal Code,” he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex.

Abdul Azeez, who is also the Baling MP, was reportedly brought into the court complex through an internal route, avoiding members of the media who had been waiting outside since 7am.

His son, Mohamed Khairul Azman, as well as several Umno leaders, were also seen at the court complex.

The latest police probe is understood to be related to matters raised in the RCI report on the management and operations of Tabung Haji.

Abdul Azeez had previously been remanded for seven days by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) from Aug 26 to assist investigations arising from the RCI findings.

The RCI report, made public on July 29, outlined several weaknesses concerning Tabung Haji’s management and operations between 2014 and 2020.

Abdul Azeez served as Tabung Haji chairman from 2014 to 2018.

The police investigation follows the MACC’s opening of investigation papers into several matters identified in the RCI report.
