Aireen Omar named AI Malaysia chairperson

KUALA LUMPUR: Aireen Omar, former AirAsia Bhd chief executive officer, has been appointed chairperson of AI Malaysia Bhd, the government's newly established agency tasked with spearheading and coordinating Malaysia's national artificial intelligence (AI) agenda.

Her appointment comes as AI Malaysia moves to strengthen its institutional structure following its launch by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 28.

In a statement, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said Aireen, who currently serves as a board member of Tune Protect Group Bhd and an adjunct professor at Universiti Malaysia Sabah, brings more than 20 years of experience in business transformation, technology and regional growth to the newly-established agency.

Her current work focuses on supporting high-growth technology ventures and founders, with expertise spanning venture scaling, AI and digital transformation, capital strategy, corporate governance and market expansion across Asean.

As the ministry's lead agency for AI, AI Malaysia is tasked with coordinating the national AI agenda, promoting safe and responsible AI adoption and driving the National AI Action Plan 2026–2030 towards achieving AI Nation 2030.

Gobind said the appointment of AI Malaysia's inaugural board marked an important milestone in strengthening the institutional foundation for Malaysia's national AI agenda.

He said the inaugural board brings together leaders from the public and private sectors, with experience spanning national transformation and public policy, digital economy development, investment and AI innovation, bringing complementary perspectives from government and industry.

"The establishment of AI Malaysia provides the nation with a dedicated institution to lead and coordinate its AI agenda.

"The appointment of the board brings strategic leadership, sound governance and diverse public- and private-sector perspectives to this mandate," he said.

Gobind added that the appointment further strengthens AI Malaysia's institutional capacity and governance as it advances its national mandate, moving the country's AI agenda from strategy to coordinated implementation and impact, anchored in accountability and the nation's long-term interests.

The other directors are Digital Ministry secretary-general Datuk Fabian Bigar, deputy secretary-general (Digital Development) Ma Sivanesan Marimuthu, Employees Provident Fund chief digital technology officer Muhammad Afhzal Abdul Rahman and Trendcell Sdn Bhd chairperson and MyTeksi Sdn Bhd director Foo Yen Ling Adelene.
