PETALING JAYA: Police have launched a murder investigation after a 55-year-old man was found dead with multiple injuries at the Persisiran Sungai Raja recreational area behind Medan Bandar in Alor Setar yesterday.

Kota Setar district police chief Assistant Commissioner Syed Basri Syed Ali said police received a call from a member of the public at about 9.50am informing them that a man was lying unconscious at the location.

“Checks found the victim lying under a gazebo before medical personnel from Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital confirmed his death,” he said in a statement today.

He said the victim had suffered several injuries, including a wound under his chin, bruising to the left side of his head, bleeding from his left ear, bruising around both eyes and injuries to his neck.

“There was also a small wound on the right side of the victim’s chin. Fresh blood found at the scene indicated that the victim had likely died shortly before he was discovered,” he said.

Syed Basri said police also found two broken wooden sticks near the body, but there were no signs of a struggle or evidence that the body had been dragged.

He said the victim was discovered by a 37-year-old local man who works as a cleaner with the Alor Setar City Council (MBAS) at about 9.20am while carrying out his duties in the area.

“The witness then informed his supervisor before a police report was lodged,” he said.

The victim was identified as Wong Tek An, who lived in Kampung Tok Pasai, Kuala Kedah, and had no criminal record.

Police believe the incident occurred between about 6am and 9.20am, when the victim was found.

Syed Basri said Wong was believed to have had no permanent place of residence and had been staying at the recreational area since early this year.

“No arrests have been made so far. Police have also seized several wooden sticks from seats inside the gazebo for investigation,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code, while the motive remains under investigation.
