Universiti Malaya becomes first Malaysian university to break into Times Higher Education Top 200

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 — Universiti Malaya (UM) has become the first Malaysian university to break into the global Top 200 of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, securing 194th place in the 2027 edition.

The achievement marks a significant climb for Malaysia’s oldest university, which ranked in the 351-400 band in the 2023 edition.

In a statement today, UM indicated its position places it among approximately the top 8.5 per cent of the 2,297 universities ranked worldwide this year, while retaining its position as Malaysia’s highest-ranked university in THE World University Rankings.

UM vice-chancellor Datuk Seri Profesor Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman said the milestone reflected the collective strength of the university community and represented a stronger Malaysian presence in the global higher education landscape.

“Breaking into the global Top 200 is not a finish line; it is a statement of intent, showing that Universiti Malaya is moving with greater confidence, sharper purpose and stronger global relevance.

“This achievement belongs to our entire community, and it sends a clear and unyielding message that a Malaysian university can stand among the world’s leading institutions when ambition is matched by discipline, talent and collective purpose,” he was quoted as saying.

Noor Azuan also said UM would build on the momentum to strengthen its contribution to Malaysia and expand its international impact, particularly through research and the development of future-ready graduates.

He also attributed the achievement to the contribution of UM’s academic and professional staff, researchers, students, alumni and partners, as well as the support of the university’s leadership, the government and Malaysia’s higher education community.

THE World University Rankings is a research-intensive university ranking system that assesses institutional performance across five pillars, namely teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook.

UM said International Outlook and Research Quality were among its strongest areas in the 2027 rankings, reflecting its expanding international academic network and collaborations as well as the growing reach and influence of research produced by its scholars.

The university said its performance across the other pillars also reflected its development as a comprehensive research university with an increasingly strong global presence. — Bernama
