I'll keep checking with Nepal PM, Anwar promises families of missing M'sians

By Zakiah Koya

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated his commitment to work closely with his Nepali counterpart regarding the 54 missing Malaysians following the recent devastating floods in Nepal.

Anwar said he requested the cooperation of Nepal's authorities to facilitate the processes enabling families to get closure as soon as possible.

"I have had conversations with the Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah. He is willing to cooperate fully.

"We have asked the Attorney General to follow through. They have their laws, and we have our laws as well. The strict term is six or seven years, while theirs is three (before families can secure a formal legal declaration of death).

"But we can still apply to the courts, and he assured me that he will cooperate fully to facilitate the process so that the families can obtain the results as soon as possible," he told the media after visiting the former staff quarters at the Royal Malaysia Air Force Air Base in Sungai Besi on Friday (Oct 2).

He had earlier performed Friday prayers at Masjid Abdullah bin Zubair.

The visit was to get a first-hand look at a development project by KLCC Development on the site.

Anwar was briefed by head of KLCC Development Sdn Bhd Wan Shamilah Wan Muhammad Saidi on the proposed project.

Earlier in the day, one of the 55 Malaysians unaccounted for following the devastating floods in Nepal was confirmed safe and back in Malaysia.

On Monday (Sept 28), a month after the floods, families of Malaysians still missing in the disaster called for Anwar's intervention as they claimed that they were still in the dark with many questions left unanswered following a meeting with Wisma Putra and government agencies.

On Aug 26, devastating flash floods struck the Nepal-China border, killing more than 1,400 people to date, while thousands more remain missing.
