China offers AI training openings

By T.C. Khor

GEORGE TOWN: China will provide 5,000 artificial intelligence (AI) training opportunities for developing countries over the next five years, said Chinese Consul-General in Penang Zhou Youbin.

Zhou said China and Malaysia were moving in the same direction in promoting the sound development of AI and ensuring its benefits were shared.

He added that Malaysia’s National AI Action Plan 2026–2030, launched this year, similarly emphasised innovation-driven development, safe and trusted governance and inclusive access to AI.

“China stands ready to work with Malaysia and other Asean countries to uphold openness and cooperation, and pursue mutual benefit and win-win outcomes, so that more new technologies can find practical applications, and the benefits of AI development can reach more households and communities.”

He also said the Chinese Consulate-General in Penang would continue to serve as a bridge between China and Asean, supporting stronger cooperation in AI and emerging industries and helping advance more practical cooperation in northern Malaysia.

The Asean-China AI and Emerging Industry Cooperation and Business Matchmaking Forum was held on Oct 6 in conjunction with AI Horizon 2026, which brings together technology companies, industry players, researchers, educators and other stakeholders to explore AI adoption and emerging technologies.

On May 17, 35 Malaysian students departed for China under the Malaysia-China Youth TVET Training 2.0 programme for training in AI and technical fields.

The programme is expected to send 500 Malaysian youths to China for training in areas including AI, electric vehicles, automation, robotics, automotive engineering and electronics.

Zhou said China would also establish AI application cooperation centres with Asean, the African Union and other key members of the Global South.

He added that the initiatives reflected China’s commitment to sharing the benefits of technological development and helping developing countries narrow the AI and digital divide.

“China has always upheld the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, and worked to share the benefits of scientific and technological progress with the rest of the world.”
