KLCC, KL Tower fade from view as thick haze blankets capital

THICK haze blanketing Kuala Lumpur has raised concerns among commuters and parents sending their children to school, with iconic landmarks including KLCC, KL Tower and TRX reportedly disappearing from view.

Photos shared on social media showed a hazy and blurred city skyline, while several netizens reported poor visibility during the morning rush hour.

One netizen posted photos and wrote on Threads: “9am on Thursday. Thick haze at Fraser’s Hill. Haze in KL is bad and everything is lost from view in KL. IPU reading for Ampang is 248 but schools are still open. Pity the students. Please take care of yourself and wear a mask when going to work.”

According to a netizen, Raja Faraa, who was driving to drop her niece off at school, said visibility along Jalan Ampang was particularly poor.

“Jalan Ampang, around 7am this morning. You can barely see KLCC in front of me. When I left home around 6.45am, the air quality reading was already hovering close to 200. It was 197 when I left home,” she wrote on her account on Threads.

She questioned whether schools should have clearer procedures when air pollution readings are approaching the threshold at which schools are required to close.

“KPM (Education Ministry) says schools must close immediately once the official IPU exceeds 200. Fine, but what happens when it’s hovering close to that level at 6.30am to 7am and the children are already on their way to school, teachers are already standing outside the gates waiting for them, and then the reading crosses 200 after everyone arrives?” she asked.

“Do the children turn around and go home? Does the school wait for instructions from PPD (District Education Office)?”

The woman also questioned whether schools or parent-teacher associations should communicate with parents earlier when air quality readings are approaching the threshold.

“At what point should schools or PIBGs start communicating with parents when the trend is clearly heading towards 200, rather than waiting until it actually crosses the line?” she asked.

She acknowledged that keeping children at home was not always straightforward, particularly with examinations approaching.

“Because this isn’t as simple as just keeping your child at home. Exams are coming. My niece had to go today because she has an exam, and I can’t simply keep my own son home whenever I personally feel the air looks bad while the rest of his classmates are expected to attend,” she said.

She added that she had checked the Education Ministry’s existing haze guidelines and noted that parents who were genuinely concerned about their children’s health could keep them at home as long as the school was informed, while examinations were expected to continue.

“So, perhaps, what parents need now isn’t another reminder that 200 = close the school. We need clearer, faster communication about the grey area before it reaches 200,” she said.

She also questioned whether waiting for the official reading to cross the threshold could mean children had already been exposed to unhealthy air.

“By the time everyone is already sitting in class and somebody announces, ‘Okay, IPU has reached 201, go back’, haven’t we missed the whole point of protecting the children in the first place?”

The woman also expressed sympathy for teachers who had to stand outside and welcome students amid the haze.

“Honestly, I sympathise with the teachers standing outside welcoming students in the haze. I know everyone is just following instructions. The communication and decision-making need to move faster. Don’t you agree?” she said.
