2027 Budget: RM2,500 minimum salary for graduates, semi-skilled workers

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will introduce a minimum monthly salary of RM2,500 for graduates and semi-skilled workers as part of reforms to the country's wage framework.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when tabling 2027 Budget in the Dewan Rakyat today, said the move was necessary as the existing minimum wage only raised the income floor for workers, while wages for skilled employees remained insufficient relative to their qualifications.

"The minimum wage only raises the income floor for workers, while the wages of skilled workers are still not commensurate with their qualifications," he said.

Anwar also welcomed the commitment by government-linked investment companies (GLICs) and government-linked companies (GLCs) to raise their living wage benchmark from RM3,100 to RM3,400 a month.

The move is expected to benefit 230,000 workers.

He said several employers in key sectors, including banking and oil and gas, had also established more appropriate salary levels.
