9 vie for PKR VP post, no nominations yet for No. 2 post

KUALA LUMPUR: As of 11pm last night, nine leaders had confirmed their nominations for the vice president post in the PKR election scheduled for the end of this month.

The candidates include three current officeholders: Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad; Science and Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang; and Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amiruddin Shaari, who also announced his intention to defend his post, had not submitted his nomination as of last night.

The following have also submitted their nominations: Deputy Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan; PKR deputy secretary-general Dr Sathia Prakash Nadarajan; Segamat member of Parliament (MP) R. Yuneswaran, Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin; Senator Abun Sui Anyit; and former Selangor state executive councillor Hee Loy Sian.

For the positions of president and deputy president, no nominations have been received so far, though competition is expected for the party's number two position.

For the Central Leadership Council positions, 62 leaders have submitted their nominations, including Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil; Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim; former Simpang Renggam MP Dr Maszlee Malik; and actor-director, Hans Isaac.

Also among the nominees are Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir; Deputy National Unity Minister K. Saraswathy; Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung; Batu Pahat MP Onn Abu Bakar; Gopeng MP Tah Kar Hing; Ledang MP Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh; and Selangor state executive councillors, Najwan Halimi and Dr Fahmi Ngah.

In the party's women's wing, only the incumbent women's chief, Fadhlina Sidek, and deputy women's Chief, Juwairiyah Zulkifli, have submitted their nominations.

There have been five nominations for the post of women's vice chief, and 40 nominations for the women's executive committee.

Previously, Ampang MP, Rodziah Ismail, announced her intention to once again challenge Fadhlina, repeating their 2022 contest.

As for the youth wing, no nominations have been received for the chief post, although the current deputy youth chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim, has expressed his intention to run for the position.

One nomination has been received for deputy youth chief, from Kota Damansara assemblyman, Izuan Kasim, while 10 nominations have been received for vice youth chief and 49 for its executive committee.

The nomination period for all central leadership positions remains open until midnight today, with voting set to take place on May 23 during the 2025 PKR National Congress in Johor Baru.
