Transport Ministry to release statement on MH17 decision soon

PUTRAJAYA: The Transport Ministry is working with the Foreign Ministry to prepare an official statement following the International Civil Aviation Organisation's (ICAO) decision holding Russia responsible for the 2014 downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.

Unity Government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the statement is expected to be issued in the coming days.

"The Cabinet has reviewed the statement issued by ICAO concerning the downing of flight MH17 in July 2014.

"The Transport Minister (Anthony Loke) has informed that a media statement will be issued by the ministry in response to ICAO's statement, and we can expect it in the next few days. There is some coordination being made with Wisma Putra," Fahmi said during the Communication Ministry's weekly press conference here today.

On Monday, the Dutch and Australian governments issued separate statements announcing that the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) had ruled that Russia was responsible for the shooting down of the Malaysian airliner over Ukraine, which resulted in the deaths of all 298 passengers and crew on board.

Both governments also said that the ICAO would consider, in the coming weeks, what form of reparation was in order.

MH17 was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on July 17, 2014 when it was shot down over eastern Ukraine amid heavy fighting between pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian forces.

In November 2022, Dutch judges convicted two Russian nationals and one Ukrainian man in absentia of murder for their involvement in the attack. Moscow condemned the ruling as "scandalous" and has refused to extradite its citizens.
