'They were my brothers' – FRU survivor remembers tragic crash

TELUK INTAN: Lance Corporal Muhammad Aniq Taufiq Rozi, 26, recalls only the sound of a sudden crash before realising he was lying on the floor of the police truck.

He was one of nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel injured in a collision involving a lorry transporting stones at Km15 of Jalan Chikus–Sungai Lampam on Tuesday.

Muhammad Aniq said he heard the screeching of brakes followed by a loud impact, and the next thing he knew, he was on the floor of the vehicle.

"I was semi-conscious before a colleague from another truck pulled me out. It all happened so quickly, and I was rushed to hospital soon after," he said.

He was discharged from Teluk Intan Hospital yesterday and has since returned to his family home in Arau, Perlis.

Earlier, he received a visit from Hilir Perak district police chief Assistant Commissioner Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin, at a rest house in Taman Melor.

Still reeling from the trauma of the accident, Muhammad Aniq said he regarded the nine FRU members who died in the crash as his brothers.

"Every day in the ward, I kept thinking about them. It's difficult to come to terms with their loss. I saw them as senior colleagues — like elder brothers," he said.

Bakri said that Muhammad Aniq was discharged from hospital at 9.30pm yesterday.

He said that the police had arranged for a private ambulance to transport the policeman back to his family residence in Jejawi, Arau, today.

"The Hilir Perak District Police Headquarters arranged accommodation for the family and coordinated transportation for the victim," he said, adding that Muhammad Aniq had suffered internal injuries to his lungs and lower back.

On Tuesday, it was reported that a police truck carrying 18 personnel from FRU Unit 5 Sungai Senam was involved in a fatal crash with a stone-laden lorry at around 8.50am.

Eight officers died at the scene, while a ninth succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at Teluk Intan Hospital. Nine others sustained injuries.

The FRU team had been returning to Ipoh after completing their duties at the Chitrapournami festival when the accident occurred.
