Small traders can still use subsidized LPG cylinders but with conditions – Fuziah

By TV3 Bulletin
KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, Dr Fuziah Salleh, today provided a simple and concise explanation on the issue of purple liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) barrels for commercial use and also subsidized gas cylinders.
Using the analogy of Makcik Kiah referring to small traders, Fuziah in a post on Facebook said that small traders can still use subsidized LPG cylinders that are green.
He said, however, the condition is that the small trader cannot use more than three subsidized LPG cylinders weighing 14kg at a time with the maximum total weight of the gas cylinder being 42kg.
"Makcik Kiah doesn't even need to use the purple gas canister. There are still some who are confused, so let me explain it simply. Small traders like Makcik Kiah can still use the green (subsidized) gas canister."
"The condition is, no more than three 14 kg gas canisters at a time. This means, if Aunt Kiah uses one canister to fry bananas, one for noodles, and one for water, Aunt Kiah is still eligible to use the subsidized green canister."
"No need to change to purple bins," he said.
Since May 1, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) announced the implementation of Ops Gasak to curb the leakage and misuse of subsidized LPG cylinders, especially involving medium and large-scale industries.
Apart from that, it aims to combat fraud through illegal decanting activities, which is the transfer of LPG from subsidized barrels to non-subsidized barrels for commercial sales and smuggling.
At the same time, Fuziah reminded all parties not to scare the people with inaccurate information because the government will continue to ensure that subsidies reach those who truly deserve them.
"'Purple' gas cylinders (without subsidies) are only mandatory for large-scale industrial and commercial users such as large restaurants, factories, hotels and the like.
"So, let's not scare the people with inaccurate information. What is important is that government assistance reaches those who truly deserve it and subsidies continue to be enjoyed by the small and middle class," he said.
Previously, there was inaccurate information posted on Facebook claiming that small traders would be burdened by the use of unsubsidized gas cylinders.
The Ministry of National Development and Reform had previously denied claims that all hawkers and traders were prohibited from using subsidized LPG cylinders.
Its Minister, Datuk Armizan Ali, reportedly said that the claim of cutting and abolishing LPG subsidies under Ops Gasak, which was implemented to curb LPG subsidy leakage, was also untrue.
He reportedly said that the measure to make it mandatory to apply for a Scheduled Controlled Goods Permit (PBKB) only applies to any party that uses LPG in excess of 42kg and it has been implemented since 2021.
