KUANTAN: A total of 123 trainees of the National Service Training Programme (PLKN) 3.0 Second Series were excited to be given the opportunity to shoot using the M16 weapon at the Sea Region Headquarters (Mawilla) One Range, Tanjung Gelang here today.

Those from the 505th Territorial Army Regiment Camp in Pekan, who were using the M16 for the first time, did not expect to learn how to use the weapon, which involved four positions, namely prone, sitting, kneeling and standing.

For Desmond Oliver Jilah Sumpongol, 18, from Papar, Sabah, at first he felt nervous because he had never held a weapon, especially an M16.

“However, as soon as the trainer gave him an explanation and how to use it, the nervous feeling disappeared and he felt excited when he used the weapon for the first time.

“Actually, I was happy when I was listed as a trainee even though I was initially surprised because I had never been to the Peninsula.

“But when I was at this camp, I was exposed to a lot of new things and made new friends from various races, namely Malays, Chinese and Indians,” he said.

Aiman Khawarizmi Kamaruddin, 20 from Kota Bharu, Kelantan, could not hide his joy at being given the opportunity to use the weapon at distances of 25 and 100 metres.

He said the opportunity was a valuable experience as he voluntarily joined the PLKN while waiting to continue his studies at university as a Malaysian Higher School Certificate (STPM) graduate.

“After three weeks at the camp, it not only provided new experiences, but also strengthened his mind and body if the country faced any tests in the future,” he said. Meanwhile, the Director of the Training Operations Division of the National Service Training Department (JLKN), Colonel Mazlizan Shaikh Osman, said a total of 257 PLKN trainees participated in the shooting training held for two days starting today.

“Today, a total of 123 trainees were divided into two groups, namely Alpha and Bravo, while tomorrow it will involve 134 trainees from the Charlie and Delta groups.

“Shooting training is implemented in the PLKN based on past studies that many trainees want training outside, which involves the military, which they are given exposure to.

"If they were elsewhere, they would not have the opportunity to use weapons unless they joined the uniformed forces of the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) or the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM).

"Before being allowed to do this practical shooting training, they were given classes from the first, second and third weeks, which were an introduction to weapons and safety measures, especially at the target range.

"In PLKN 3.0, we have two main modules, namely nationalism, which is 30 percent, which is the element of identity, love of country and unity, while military (70 percent) which is basic military skills, physical training, football, futsal and volleyball," he said.
