Trump announces travel ban on people from 12 countries

By TV3 Bulletin

UNITED STATES: US President Donald Trump signed a proclamation imposing a complete travel ban on citizens from 12 countries and restrictions on citizens from seven other countries.

Countries that are completely banned include Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

In addition to the ban, which will take effect on Monday, stricter restrictions are also imposed on citizens from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela.

"I must act to protect the national security and national interests of the United States and its people," Trump said in his proclamation.

During his first term in 2017, Trump issued an executive order banning travel to the US by citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries: Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.

Citizens from the listed countries are either prevented from boarding flights to the US or detained at US airports upon arrival. Those affected include tourists, individuals wishing to visit family and friends, students and educators in the US, and business people.

Trump defended his initial travel ban on national security grounds, arguing that it was intended to protect the United States and insisting that the ban was not anti-Muslim. However, during his first campaign for the presidency, Trump called for a travel ban on Muslims.
