Gerik crash: Bus driver in hospital, police await discharge for remand

By Zahratulhayat Mat Arif

IPOH: The remand order for the driver of the bus involved in the fatal crash in Gerik, which was carrying Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students, will be issued once he is discharged from hospital.

Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the 42-year-old driver was currently receiving treatment at Taiping Hospital.

"We have to wait for his discharge before taking further action. He is still under treatment at Taiping Hospital," he said when contacted.

During a press conference yesterday, Noor Hisam had said the driver sustained injuries to his hand in the crash.

He added that the police had yet to record his statement .

It was earlier reported that the bus was carrying 42 UPSI students and a bus attendant, in addition to the driver.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the bus rear-ended a Perodua Alza, causing the driver to lose control before the vehicle veered off the road at Km53 of the Jeli-Gerik Highway.

The victims in the Perodua Alza were a married couple in their 30s, their six-year-old daughter, and their three-year-old son.

Meanwhile, 27 injured passengers — 23 women and four men — are receiving treatment at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital, Gerik Hospital, Baling Hospital, and Taiping Hospital.
