Penang Hill cable car project: CM leads delegation to Switzerland, Austria

By Audrey Dermawan

GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow will lead an official delegation to Switzerland and Austria from today until next Monday as part of the state government's ongoing efforts to advance the Penang Hill cable car project.

In a statement, the Chief Minister's Office said the working visit, hosted by Doppelmayr and Hartasuma, marks a significant step forward in the implementation of one of Penang's key sustainable mobility initiatives.

During the visit, the chief minister and his delegation are scheduled to meet with key suppliers and industry leaders involved in the project.

These include Doppelmayr Seilbahnen GmbH, the company's headquarters and manufacturing facility in Wolfurt, Austria; Fatzer AG, a cable car ropeway supplier in Romanshorn, Switzerland; Garaventa AG, a funicular system supplier in Goldau, Switzerland; and CWA Constructions SA, a gondola cabin supplier based in Olten, Switzerland.

"These technical visits are crucial for understanding the advanced engineering, operational procedures, and stringent safety standards that underpin world-class cable car systems.

"The aim is to ensure that Penang Hill's cable car infrastructure is delivered to the highest international benchmarks," it said today.

The Chief Minister's Office said that, in addition, the chief minister and his delegation would engage with the Mayor of Bettmeralp in Raron, Switzerland, and Aletsch Bahnen AG, the local cable car operator, to explore best practices in mountain tourism and sustainable transport systems.

Bettmeralp, a renowned car-free village, is accessible exclusively by cable car.

"These engagements will provide valuable input for enhancing Penang Hill's long-term development as a sustainable and accessible destination," it added.

The statement said the state government remains firmly committed to delivering the Penang Hill cable car project with an uncompromising emphasis on safety, quality, and service reliability.

"This official mission is a critical part of that commitment," it said.

Last June, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim launched the Penang Hill cable car project, marking a significant milestone in the state's efforts to enhance Penang's tourism infrastructure, improve connectivity and accessibility to Penang Hill, and transform it into a must-visit historic landmark.

The cable car system, a partnership with Hartasuma Sdn Bhd, is expected to be completed by 2026.
