45 killed as floods, heavy rains hit Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Heavy rains and flash floods that have hit Pakistan have claimed another life, with 45 people killed since the start of the monsoon season, disaster management officials said yesterday.

The highest death toll was recorded in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan, with 21 people including 10 children killed.

Disaster management authorities said 14 victims died in the Swat Valley, and media reported that a family on a riverbank was swept away by flash floods.

In the Punjab province, the most populous and located on the border with India, 13 deaths have been recorded since last Wednesday.

Eight of the victims were children who died when the walls or roofs of their houses collapsed due to heavy rain, while the adults drowned.

A further 11 deaths related to the natural disaster were recorded in the provinces of Sindh and Balochistan.

The country's meteorological service had previously warned that the risk of heavy rain and the possibility of flash floods would remain elevated until Saturday.

Last month, nearly 32 people died in strong storms in the South Asian country, which has also experienced several extreme weather events in spring, including powerful hailstorms.

Pakistan, with a population of 240 million, is among the countries in the world most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
