Trump to send import tariff letter next Friday

By TV3 Bulletin

WASHINGTON: United States (US) President Donald Trump confirmed that his administration will begin sending letters to foreign countries starting next Friday, informing them of new tariff rates that will be imposed on goods imported into the US.

The move is seen as part of the Trump administration's tough approach to global trade policy, following the failure of negotiations with more than 150 countries by the set deadline.

"I'm going to send a letter, that's the end of the trade negotiations," he told the media before departing for Iowa.

""Dear Mr. Japan, here's the story. You will be charged a 25 percent tariff on your car," he added jokingly.

Trump explained that the letters would be sent by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, with the tariff rates to be imposed considered 'very fair' based on the trade deficits and diplomatic relations of the countries involved.

He also stated that countries that do not agree with the tariff rate can choose to manufacture their products in the US.

"If they complain, if they want zero tariff rates, then build your products here, in the US," he said.

The Trump administration has previously imposed a basic tariff of 10 percent on all imports, and reciprocal tariffs of up to 50 percent on more than 60 countries.

The temporary suspension of the tariffs is scheduled to expire on July 9, and the letter is expected to mark the beginning of a new phase of US trade policy.

Trade analysts warn that such a unilateral approach has the potential to increase market uncertainty and undermine international economic relations, especially if it is done without any further negotiations.
